Memorializing Resolution Supporting a Continued Ban on Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration and Development

WHEREAS, The Federal government intends to reopen the countrys recently finalized Five-Year Plan for offshore oil and gas development, which prohibited drilling along the Atlantic Coast; and

 

WHEREAS, the Town of East Hampton relies upon its pristine beaches, estuaries, harbors, bays and offshore waters to support our tourist, fishing, recreation and real estate industries; and 

 

WHEREAS, a single oil spill anywhere along the Atlantic coastline could potentially have a devastating impact on our economy and environment, as the Deep Water Horizon disaster did on the Gulf coast; and

 

WHEREAS, the Town of East Hampton has adopted the goal of using 100% renewable energy and is focused on transitioning away from the use of fossil fuels; therefore be it

 

RESOLVED, The Town Board hereby declares its support of a continued ban on offshore oil and gas exploration and development along the Atlantic seaboard.
